Is it possible to lighten a dyed hair color?

I had my hair dyed dark brown three months ago (SEMI Permanent), to cover red hair color that was done a month or so before that. It's probably a medium to dark brown on the ends, with the old red hair color coming through. I went to a salon and asked for her to lighten my hair color to a light brown. Well, she decided to only put lightener on my roots (which are now a medium blonde), and waited until after to tell me that you can't lift color with color. I'm going back tomorrow to see what I can do to fix the botched color job. How can I lighten my hair (without using highlights), without causing too much damage?

I had to have all the color stripped out of my hair then another color put in when I had a botched color job. That is about all I could do

I'm sorry, your hairdresser is right, you can't lift color with color. They are going to have to bleach it to dye it again it up or put highlights in to create a lighter look. Bleach isn't as bad as it seems, as long as you let a professional do it. Edit:

Although, after reading this question over again, if she told you that AFTER she did something to it, I would check another salon, she sounds a lil flaky.

I say go to a different hair salon cuz they dont seem to know what they are talking about. I had that done to me. i had box colored dye then few months later went to get it highlighted and they did it but it was orange so i went back and they toned it better. then i went back to brown and toned that. then i got higlights again not to long ago and it took a while. but anyway go to a different salon! you dont want them to damage your hair even more by putting so much dye in it, dont want it to fall out!

Ok, here we go.

1. Red is the hardest color to get out, you cannot color over it to get it out, the red tone will always be present and eventually the new haircolor will fade and you will have red again, not as brilliant, but red none the less.

2. Your hairdresser is right on, although her method of dying your roots is a bit odd, not sure if I got that part of your story. Yet, she cannot just dye your hair, she needs to bleach it all out (yes bleach it) to remove any and all old color. This will damage your hair, WILL not be a pretty picture, BUT I have an alternative for you.

3. I have done all you can imagine to my hair, so I have a pretty good idea of what you're talking about, PLUS I was literally brought up in a hair salon, my mother owned one for my entire life. So, what I would do is go to the nearest drug store and get a dark brown color, nothing too over the top, but dark brown with GOLDEN tones, so DARK GOLDEN BROWN works best. And then leave it on your hair, the ends for longer, so 20 minutes more on the ends than on the roots, about 15 minutes at the roots. Buy as much as you need, don't undercoat and don't overcoat. When you see the result you'll notice it's almost a light brown because the golden highlights look great. Now, for the next 6 months use this same color. Don't vary, don't use reds, don't use darker brown, use the same color. After 6 months get a good cut. You'll notice with a good cut and the color that your hair is back in shape.

My advice for the future, unless you want to stay a redhead, don't use the red hair dye. And no matter what you do, never let a hairdresser bleach out your hair. What they fail to tell you is the hair follicle becomes pourous and the color will literally wash away if you do not color every 2 weeks, so you'll be left with a gross brown color that is neither attractive or desired. You will be amazed to believe that normal products you find in stores will do the exact thing your hair dresser would do.

And one last thing. When cutting your hair if you have really thick hair, you may want to cut some long layers into it, gets rid of the dry stuff quicker and ads some bounce.

Good luck.

yea you can... My friend dyed her hair black then after a while wanted her natural hair colour back, so she went to a specialist. You can even get back your natural hair colour....

you have to go to a professional hair colourist....

it would cost you, but it's worth it

you might also have to treat your hair once or month or so to deal with the amount of times you coloured it... just to keep it from falling and healthy

Oh my gosh the same thing happened to me. They can't lift color with color, so they stripped the color out of my hair to this ugly brassy orange then colored over it with a light brown. Biggest Mistake EVER! My hair no longer felt like hair, it was straw! almost a year later I am still recovering. Best of luck to you!

strip all color from hair OR get another semi permanent dye to cover roots.
